Phillies suffer big blow as Hoskins goes back on injured list

PHILS INSIDER

The Phillies, desperately trying to stay in the playoff hunt with 36 games left, will be without their home run and RBI leader for at least 10 days.

The team placed Rhys Hoskins back on the injured list Thursday afternoon with a left groin strain. He had just come off the IL on Sunday and hit three home runs in two games. But Hoskins clearly had mobility issues at first base Wednesday night, hence the trip back to the IL.

The Phillies have missed Hoskins’ bat recently and will continue to as he mends. He leads the club with 27 homers and 71 RBIs. He will be out until at least Sept. 5.

Brad Miller was to start at first base in place of Hoskins against Arizona on Thursday night.

The Phillies enter the game five games back in the NL East. The team on Thursday also activated reliever Jose Alvarado (shoulder fatigue) from the IL and designated pitcher Chase Anderson for assignment.

The Phillies are 63-63. The Diamondbacks have the worst record in the NL at 43-85, but they swept the Phils in three games last week in Arizona.

Here is the Phillies’ lineup for Thursday night’s game.

  • 1. Odubel Herrera CF
  • 2. Jean Segura 2B
  • 3. Bryce Harper RF
  • 4. J.T. Realmuto C
  • 5. Didi Gregorius SS
  • 6. Brad Miller 1B
  • 7. Ronald Torreyes 3B
  • 8. Travis Jankowski CF
  • 9. Matt Moore P

Right-hander Zac Gallen starts for Arizona.
