The Phillies will look to add pitching this month as they attempt to stop a nine-year playoff drought from reaching 10.
And, so, the team will send a scout to watch Cole Hamels’ showcase Friday in Texas, according to sources.
It’s really a no-brainer. The Phillies are known for practicing due diligence. They send scouts to workouts all the time, stateside and in Latin America. Why not see if Hamels might have a few good months left in his arm? The Phils could surely use the help.

Hamels’ workout will be well attended as many clubs are looking to fortify their pitching staffs for the second half of the season. The left-hander, who was drafted by the Phils in 2002 and won 114 games over 10 seasons in red pinstripes, is playoff-tested. He passed a big one in October 2008 when he backboned the Phillies’ run to a World Series title. At age 24, Hamels was the MVP of the National League Championship Series and the World Series.
But Hamels is 37 now and he only pitched 3 1/3 innings with the Atlanta Braves last season due to a triceps injury and shoulder fatigue. Hamels has spent months rehabbing and building arm strength in the hopes of helping a contender in the second half.
Could that mean a reunion with the Phillies? Time will tell.
