Tim Tebow is having a downright terrible season

Things are not going well this year for former Eagles preseason QB Tim Tebow in his quest to play Major League Baseball.

Entering play on Sunday, he was hitting just .137 with a .381 OPS and 29 strikeouts in just 73 at-bats. Tebow is playing this season with Mets Triple A affiliate in Syracuse and is clearly being humbled by his promotion to the top level of minor-league baseball.

Let’s take a step back here for a second, though. I’ll admit, Tebow has done far better in his journey than I imagined he would and, in my opinion, even without making the bigs, he should be extremely proud of what he has done to this point.

Before an injury that ended his season last year, a broken hamate bone in his right hand, Tebow could have been in line for a late-season cup of coffee with the Mets. He hit .273 in Double A with a .734 OPS, his best season to date. Don’t be fooled, those are incredible numbers for a guy who started playing minor-league baseball in 2017 after a career in the NFL and in television. Trying to hit a baseball is considered one of the toughest things to do in professional sports and Tebow was handling it in a very short amount of time.

There are a few factors in play here, too. In a study done by SB Nation, they found that, while baseball players should get back to full strength after breaking a hamate bone, it takes roughly a year of at-bats for numbers to get back to their pre-injury levels. Including spring training, Tebow is less than 100 at-bats post-injury. Also, the Triple A level is full of older, seasoned, baseball players who have been doing this their entire lives.

The Mets took a risk by signing Tebow to a deal to play baseball, and despite his troubles this season, he has made a believer out of me and I’m hoping he overcomes this rough patch, gets ample time to mend and gets one more shot at a run at the majors.
