Player to watch at training camp: Ifeanyi Momah

Share

The last time the Eagles had a wide receiver 6-foot-7 or taller, he was 6-8, and his name was Harold Carmichael. He was a four-time pro bowler and part of the NFL's All Decade Team of the 1970s.

As far as I know, Harold never had 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash. Oh he was fast alright -- he was timed at 4.6 or so. He could throw a football from end zone to end zone legend has it, and he could field punts one handed. Yes, Harold is a legend.

That's why I'm watching Boston College's Ifeanyi Momah during training camp. I don't know about the long toss or the one-handed punts, but Momah is 6-7 and has been timed at 4.4 in the 40. Confirmed. Did it multiple times (he caught Carmichael's attention with a 4.39 at his private Eagles workout).

That was after he missed the 2012 season at BC following a knee injury. After the first practice for the Eagles' rookies, Birds' crack PR man Derrick Boyko led his charges to a meet-the-media session in front of the NovaCare complex. There's Lane Johnson, there's Jordan Poyer, there's Bennie Logan, check check and check.

"Who's the undersized D-end?" I asked of no one in particular. "He's not a D-end," I got back. "That's Ifeanyi Momah. He's a wideout."

A wideout. Oh really. Six-foot-seven, 240 pounds with 4.4 speed? Looked him up. Played some D-end for BC in spots. He's got the size and he's got the speed. Don't know if he's got the hands. Don't know if he's got Chip Kelly's eye. But the Birds signed him as a free agent. Harold's worked with him during minicamp.

Next month, I'm gonna watch.
