Dustin Pedroia Has Fear of Flying, But Rocky IV Helps Him Through

Here's a quirky sports item with a strained Philly tie-in. Red Sox star second baseman Dustin Pedroia is afraid of flying but uses Rocky IV to help him get through it.

Pedroia was a guest on ESPN's Baseball Tonight yesterday and his fear of flying came up. The Red Sox Monster transcribed it:

Pedroia: I hate flying. That's my biggest thing.
... Alex Cora, who is one of my best friends and was with a couple of
years ago, he used a line from "Rocky" on it and I still kind of live
by it. I looked at him one time and I was scared to death. And he goes,
"Hey man: If we die, we die." And I'm like, "That's a good point."

Berthiaume: That's "Rocky IV," right? "I must break you."

Pedroia: Yeah. Yes, straight from "Rocky IV."
And when he said that to me, I said, "Yeah, you're kind of right. So,
I've been a little bit better since then, but I stick to that on the
plane.

Consulting the amazing Rocky canon in all facets of life is always a smart move. I've actually tried to lead my own life in Rocky's footsteps by waking up every morning to a nice delicious glass of raw eggs. I don't like to carry too much stuff in my pockets, otherwise I feel like a kangaroo, and I plan to propose to my future wife at the Philadelphia Zoo.
