GREENVILLE, N.C. — Re’Mahn Davis rushed for a career-high 157 yards with a touchdown and Temple defeated East Carolina 27-17 on Thursday night.
The true freshman surpassed the 135 yards he had a week earlier in a win over Georgia Tech. He carried the ball 24 times and scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter that broke a 10-10 tie.
Temple (4-1, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) had its quarterbacks go 27 of 39 for 253 yards. Starter Anthony Russo was 23 of 34 for 208 with a touchdown pass late in the third quarter to push the lead to 14. Branden Mack had nine receptions for 107 yards and Isaiah Wright 9 for 104, including a 7-yard score.
Holton Ahlers was 19 of 39 for 229 yards and two touchdowns, the last coming with 29 seconds left, for the Pirates (3-3, 0-2). CJ Johnson had eight catches for 100 yards with catches of 14 yards to open the scoring and 10 to close it.
Temple leads the series 9-8, having won all six matchups following the formation of the AAC. The game was delayed for about 10 minutes after some of the lights went out with about 3½ minutes remaining.
Anthony Russo threw for four touchdowns and Temple rolled past East Carolina 49-6 on Saturday.
Russo, a freshman making his fourth start, was 21-of-25 passing for 254 yards and was intercepted once. He threw a 24-yard TD pass to Sean Ryan and a 7-yarder to Branden Mack for a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
Isaiah Wright's 59-yard punt return down the left sideline made it 28-0 in the second quarter and extended the Owls' streak of scoring a non-offensive touchdown in all six of their games this season. He caught a 19-yard TD pass for a 35-3 halftime lead.
Russo's fourth scoring pass was a 31-yarder on a one-handed catch by Randle Jones in the third quarter.
The Owls (3-3, 2-0 American), who have won five straight over the Pirates (2-3, 0-2), outgained ECU 470-193, allowing the Pirates just 3.1 yards per catch and 2.7 per carry.
Quinton Rose scored 23 points, Josh Brown had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Temple never trailed in defeating East Carolina 90-73 on Wednesday night to win its fourth straight.
Shizz Alston Jr. added 14 points with seven assists, J.P. Moorman II had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Ernest Aflakpui and Nate Pierre-Louis scored 10 points apiece for the Owls (14-10, 6-6 American Athletic Conference).
ECU closed to 51-50 on Kentrell Barkley's back-to-back 3s, but Temple pulled away on a 12-0 run while the Pirates went scoreless for 4 minutes. The Owls led 73-63 on Damion Moore's dunk with 7:31 left.
Brown hit consecutive baskets for a 15-4 lead and Temple led by as many as 12 in the first half and was up 41-35 at halftime behind his 11 points.
Barkley scored 20 points with four 3s, Isaac Fleming had 17 points, Shawn Williams 13 and B.J. Tyson 12 for the Pirates (9-14, 3-9).
