Jackie Robinson 60 Years Later

The Phils game was rained out yesterday, and may very well be rained out today, so we didn't get a chance to see the Phillies and Astros honor Jackie Robinson.  It's been documented that Philly was among the worst places for Jackie to play, so it certainly would have been nice to see modern day Philly show him some love.

Ryan Howard and other Phillies have voiced concerns over the decline in black athletes playing in the MLB.  Sunday's Inquirer tells of an effort between the city of Philadelphia, the Phillies, the Philadelphia Youth Organization, and Major League Baseball to build a year round baseball academy in Kensington.

The indoor facility would allow a player to take batting practice
in the winter, then walk across the hall for a class dedicated to
preparing for the SAT.  Major League Baseball is ready to support the project.  "From where I sit, absolutely, I expect this will happen," said
Jimmie Lee Solomon, MLB's executive vice president of baseball
operations. "We would definitely look to make a commitment, financially
and in terms of human resources."

Seems like a fine idea.  A place for kids to go and play sports while learning as well seems like a novel idea, for sure, but it's certainly nice to see it going up in Kensington.

I'd also point you to some of the great stuff over at the NYTimes.
