This move makes a ton of sense.

I’ve listed Coleman as one of the Eagles’ top free agent targets for over a month now and it’s a really smart move to bring him in. They immediately fill their most glaring roster deficiency with a player who is just entering his prime in the NFL.

Coleman, 25, is a former third-round pick out of Indiana in the 2015 draft. He fits exactly what the Eagles want in a running back.

At 6-1, 210 pounds, Coleman is a threat to run the ball and to become a receiver out of the backfield. He can definitely be a three-down, feature-type back in the Eagles’ offense, but will be best used with a committee. This just means he can be the top back in the committee.

In his four seasons with the Falcons, Coleman rushed for 2,340 yards and added 1,010 receiving yards to that. He’s one of just 10 players to rush for over 2,300 yards with over 1,000 receiving yards in the last four years. The others are Lamar Miller, LeSean MCCoy, David Johnson, Mark Ingram, Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Devonta Freeman, Ezekiel Elliott and Toddy Gurley. Pretty good company.

The reason he isn’t going back to Atlanta is because the Falcons already locked up Freeman to a long-term deal and they weren’t going to play both of them. And the fact that Freeman was in front of Coleman for most of the past four years has limited Coleman’s wear-and-tear. Coleman has had just 620 touches in four seasons.

Despite his production during his four years in Atlanta, 24 running backs have had more touches during that span, including Le’Veon Bell (879), who skipped an entire season.

This move fits the Eagles’ recent M.O. in free agency. He wasn’t the top running back available and he’s still relatively young. Howie Roseman has mentioned before the importance of second-tier free agents and getting players coming off their first contracts who have much more to give.
