Hassan Whiteside responds, doesn't back down from Joel Embiid rivalry

Joel Embiid and Hassan Whiteside battled on the court on Friday night and then on social media following the Sixers' victory over the Miami Heat to finish off the preseason.

Embiid seemingly got the better of Whiteside, sending Philadelphia fans into a frenzy when he told Whiteside his "+/- was ass."

It appears as if Whiteside is taking it all in stride and actually has a pretty good level of respect for Embiid. The Miami big man was asked about the trash talk after practice over the weekend.

"It's funny to me," Whiteside said according to the Sun Sentinel. "I'm going to talk trash back if somebody talks trash to me. Maybe when I was younger, I would have been a little more angrier, I would have been a little madder.

"But, you know, that's the kind of guy he is. He makes jokes. He's a good player, so it's all fun to me. I can go all day with it."

Embiid has shown glimpses that he has the potential to be one of the greats of the NBA game on the court, while he's already one of the best at entertaining off of it. Whiteside will clearly have his hands full but he knows a little trash talk on social gets fans excited.

"Yeah, man, you know fans love it, man. Fans get into it. I love it, too," he said. "Because I know the next time we play him, he's going to give it his all, he's going to go as hard as he can. And as a competitor, that's what you want. You want your opponent to play at his maximum speed."

Playing at maximum speed is something Sixers fans hope and pray they get to see out of Embiid this season on a more regular basis. The trash talking is bonus fun.

"It's not him talking about somebody's family," Whiteside said. "It's not nothing crazy. It's just basketball. He called me softee. Come on, man. He knows that's not true. I'll be on his team's scouting report."

The Heat and the Sixers meet again on Feb. 2. Let's just hope both Embiid and Whiteside are out on the court to go another few rounds off of it afterward.

Aspiring astronaut Joel Embiid found Eric Jr. tweets funny

One of the sad things about the NBA offseason is that we don't get quite as much Joel Embiid in our lives on a regular basis.

Sure, he'll pop up at a local basketball court every now and then or maybe at a charity soccer event but we don't get to see him on our television every third day or so. That's a bummer for trusters of the process.

Thankfully, Vulture's Nate Jones caught up with Jojo the other day to ask him about some of the more eventful moments of the offseason thus far, such as Bryan Colangelo's burner accounts and his playground antics.

Embiid's answers rarely disappoint.

Jones: One of the things you’re famous for doing in the off-season is dunking on five-foot-tall white guys. Are you going to be doing more of that this summer?

Embiid: I don’t know. That’s not something I wake up in the morning like, I’m gonna go to the court and dunk on people. It’s just usually I go do my regular stuff, play tennis, and then some random fans happen to be talking shit, so then I gotta teach them a lesson. And that’s what I do.

I love it so much. Jo just has to teach fools a lesson. So that's what he does.

When asked about Colangelo's burner accounts, he calls Eric Jr., "my boy" and says he enjoyed the collar tweets: "The collar tweets were actually really fun. I enjoyed that one. Those were funny."

There's some other funny stuff mixed in, so go check out the whole Q&A, and be happy that these words actually came out of Joel Embiid's mouth:

I’ve always wanted to be an astronaut.

Are you listening, Elon Musk? Make it happen. But not until he retires in 17 years. Maybe he can head up Donald Trump's Space Force at that point. Nobody would mess with Joel Embiid in space.

Eagles players thoroughly enjoyed Baker Mayfield owning Colin Cowherd

Baker Mayfield wasn't universally praised before being drafted into the NFL. Much of the criticism surrounding him was somewhat flimsy, however.

Take Colin Cowherd for example -- speaking of guys who are not universally praised lol. He's still grasping at straws.

Cowherd had Mayfield on his show and pointed to a clip in which the quarterback tossed a touchdown and ran over to celebrate with the Ohklahoma band and student section instead of his teammates. Cowherd pointed to it being an example of Mayfield lacking... something?

Mayfield wasn't having it tough and responded in fantastic fashion. Watch the exchange below.

Plenty of people on Twitter thoroughly enjoyed the exchange; a couple of Eagles players among them.

Chris Long liked it. Lane Johnson loved it. Somebody else presumably wanted more of it.
