What They're Saying: Mixed reviews on Eagles' draft

The Eagles selected eight players last weekend in the NFL draft, with five selections on defense and three on offense.

Lane Johnson, who was drafted with the fourth overall pick, seems to be the one player that will make the most impact right away on the offensive line. Second-round pick Zach Ertz will provide another weapon on offense for whoever starts at quarterback, a situation that got even more interesting with fourth-round pick Matt Barkley.

On defense, the Eagles added: DT Bennie Logan (third round), S Early Wolff (fifth round), DE Joe Kruger (seventh round), CB Jordan Poyer (seventh round) and DE David King (seventh round).

Here's a look at what's being said about Chip Kelly's first draft as Eagles head coach:

The Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer gave the Eagles an "A," the best grade handed out.

"Top from bottom, Chip Kelly had a great first NFL draft -- using his college knowledge, especially from the Pac-12, to the Eagles' advantage," Iyer said.

Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated says the Eagles earned a "B+."

"Until we know more about Chip Kelly's plans, let's just chalk the Matt Barkley pickup to finding a potential first-round QB at No. 98. The rest of this class figures to be more important in 2013. No one more so than OT Lane Johnson, who has the athleticism to thrive under Kelly."

The Eagles received a "B" for their draft from CBS Sports' Pete Prisco.

Prisco believes the Eagles' best selection was Logan, and that their most questionable move was drafting Ertz in the second round with Brent Celek and James Casey already on the roster.

Overall, Prisco said, "They did some good things in this draft, [but] are they things that help right away?"

The Eagles also received a "B" from Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole, who believes "the start of this draft was much stronger than the end of it."

Cole loved the Johnson pick, who he claims will immediately start and shore up an offensive line that was a mess last season. Cole, however, found it "perplexing" that the Eagles would take Barkley when they already have second-year passer Nick Foles.

Fox Sports provided three draft grades by Floyd Engel, Alex Marvez and Peter Schrager. These included two "B's" and a "D."

Engel and Schrager gave the Eagles "B's." Engel liked taking "free-falling USC QB Matt Barkley in the fourth round," while Schrager thought they did well because "they got guys that Chip Kelly knows well."

Marvez gave the Eagles the worst grade of all, a "D." Although he liked taking Johnson at No. 4, he wasn't "nearly as fond of using a second-round pick on ... Ertz with Brent Celek and James Casey already on the roster nor with the Eagles spending a fourth-round choice on Barkley with Nick Foles already serving as Michael Vick’s backup.

Finally, Nate Davis of USA Today gave the Eagles a "C."

Like the others, he liked the pick of Johnson at No. 4, but isn't going "to claim we understand how all this fits."
