STAMFORD, Conn. – March 8, 2022 – Season two of NBC Sports’ podcast Beyond The Fairway Presented by Genesis, hosted by professional golfers Doug Smith and Will Lowery, launches today across all major platforms, featuring a conversation with PGA Memes creator Travis Miller.
In this week’s season two debut episode of Beyond The Fairway, Miller shares the story of how he went from selling home security to creating his own media company. Smith and Lowery also discuss Tiger Woods being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, examine Phil Mickelson’s legacy, and highlight the APGA Tour as part of a new, recurring segment called, Make the Game Your Own presented by Genesis.
Guests expected to join Beyond The Fairway in season two include actor/comedian Cedric the Entertainer, Miami Heat all-star guard Kyle Lowry, and more.
Beyond The Fairway, which launched with its debut episode in January 2021, aims to examine golf from different perspectives through conversations with celebrities, athletes and golf influencers about their passion for golf and how to expand the reach of the game..
Throughout the first season, Beyond The Fairway was joined by guests including three-time NBA champion and two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry, NBA Hall of Famer Ray Allen, Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen, Grammy-award winning rapper Macklemore, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, former pro golfer Jim Thorpe, among others.
The following are highlights from the season two premiere episode of “Beyond the Fairway”:
Lowery on Tiger Woods as he enters the World Golf Hall of Fame: “PGA TOUR probably wouldn’t be where it is right now if it weren’t for Tiger Woods.”
Smith on Woods: “I think Tiger grew the game amongst diverse communities…Everyone got in the game around ’97…when they saw Tiger get that dub at the ’97 Masters they were like, ‘Ok, let me go try this golf thing.’ … I don’t think golf would be where it is for us to talk about in a magnetic way like we do without (him).”
Miller on how golfing with partners in the corporate world led him to create PGA Memes: “I saw what golf really was to average amateur. There was a lot of fun banter back and forth, there was betting…and you left just having fun with your buddies. I learned a lot about that humorous side of golf, and then you watch it on TV and it’s just completely different, right? These guys are unbelievably talented, so serious all the time and you don’t get to know these guys’ personalities. So, I was just like, man, I think there’s something fun we can do in golf and kind of bring this amateur life thing to the forefront, but just incorporate the pros.”
Miller on ruffling feathers among players: “I don’t want to create any enemies. At the end of the day, I have a heart and I feel like I’m a good person, but there are some things like -- Patrick Reed. I’ve destroyed Patrick Reed over and over and over again, and I met him in October for the first time and it was an interesting meeting. He killed me with kindness.”
Lowery was a cast member on GOLF Channel’s hit reality series, “The Big Break,” and appeared on both “Big Break Indian Wells” and “Big Break NFL: Puerto Rico.” He currently competes on the SwingThought Tour and Advocates Pro Golf Tour, has several top-10 finishes and two victories on the mini-tour circuit, and advocates for minorities through production and content creation in the entertainment space.
Smith played collegiate golf at Florida A&M University and the University of Louisville, was the first African-American to play golf at Louisville and won the 2005 PGA National Minority Collegiate Championship during his time as a Cardinal. This past January, Smith also served as an on-course reporter throughout GOLF Channel’s coverage of the APGA Farmers Insurance Invitational.
