STAMFORD, Conn. – Jan. 5, 2023 – Two-time reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers look to clinch their fourth consecutive playoff appearance when they host Jared Goff and the NFC North rival Detroit Lions in this week’s edition of NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET with Football Night in America, followed by kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., on NBC, Peacock and Universo.
Green Bay has won four in a row to improve to 8-8 and position themselves for a win-and-in performance in the season finale. The Packers would secure the final NFC playoff spot with a victory on Sunday night. However, Detroit (8-8) has won seven of its last nine games and can clinch their first postseason berth since 2016 with a win against Green Bay and a Seattle loss/tie (vs. Los Angeles Rams earlier in the day) or other scenarios if the game ends in a tie. This Sunday marks the Lions’ first appearance on Sunday Night Football since Week 3 of the 2018 season, when Detroit defeated New England, 26-10.
Green Bay and Detroit also met in the final game of the 2016 season on SNF, with both teams entering the game at 9-6. The Packers won, 31-24, clinching the division and the No. 4 seed, while the Lions secured the No. 6 seed. Both Rodgers and Goff have had regular-season success in December and January. In their careers, Rodgers is 48-16 with 124 touchdown passes vs. only 28 interceptions, while Goff is 18-14 with 54 touchdowns vs. 23 interceptions. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is 18-1 in December and January regular-season games since taking over in 2019.
In Green Bay’s 41-17 win over Minnesota last Sunday, Rodgers threw for 159 yards and a touchdown and also added a score on the ground. Running back Aaron Jones ran for 111 yards and has rushed for at least 1,000 yards (1,073 this season) in three of the last four seasons.
Detroit kept their playoff hopes alive with Sunday’s 41-10 win against the division rival Chicago Bears. Goff threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns while the running back duo of D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams combined for three touchdowns and 274 total yards; the latter currently leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns (15). On the defensive side, lineman and 2022 No. 2 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson and linebacker James Houston became the first pair of rookie teammates each with at least seven sacks since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic.
Calling Lions-Packers is Mike Tirico (play-by-play); 17-time Emmy Award winner Cris Collinsworth (analyst); and Melissa Stark (sideline reporter). Three-time Super Bowl referee Terry McAulay is the Sunday Night Football rules analyst.

*Flex Week
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING:
Flexible scheduling will be used in Weeks 11-18. Additionally, in Weeks 5-10, flexible scheduling may be used in no more than two weeks. In Weeks 5-17, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time.
For Week 18, two Saturday games and the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to January 9. The schedule does not list Saturday games or a Sunday night game in Week 18, but games with playoff implications will be moved to those time slots. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.
