Event Highlighted by U.S. Olympic Medalists & World Champions

STAMFORD, Conn. – May 25, 2016 – NBC Sports Group presents live coverage of the 2016 Prefontaine Classic this Saturday, May 28, from Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, and continuing at 5 p.m. ET on NBC.

The Prefontaine Classic, named for famed American distance runner Steve Prefontaine, is the premier track and field meet in the United States, and the only stop in North America on the prestigious IAAF Diamond League circuit. Track and field athletes ranked in the top 50 in the world in their events are eligible to compete.

Competing for the U.S. on the men’s side are 2008 Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt in the 400m, four-time Olympic medalist Justin Gatlin and 2007 world champion Tyson Gay in the 100m, and Olympic gold medalist Aries Merritt in the 110m hurdles. In addition, reigning Olympic and world champion Christian Taylor competes against some of the best in the world in the men’s triple jump. Top international contenders include 2012 Olympic gold medalist Kirani James of Grenada, who faces Merritt in the men’s 400m. The 100m features three of the five fastest men of all-time: Gatlin, Gay, and Asafa Powell of Jamaica.

Headlining the women’s events is the 400m, in which 2012 Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross leads a deep group of U.S. women, and the 100m featuring including two-time reigning 100m Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica. In addition, two-time Olympian Shannon Rowbury and 2011 world champion Jenny Simpson will compete in the women’s 1500m, and 2013 world champion Brianna Rollins faces off against 2008 Olympic champion Dawn Harper-Nelson in the women’s 100m hurdles. 18-year-old high jumper Vashti Cunningham, daughter of former NFL QB Randall Cunningham, returns to competition in Oregon two months after winning the indoor world title in Portland.
