10 players Orlando City, New York City FC should take in MLS Expansion Draft

Adam Moffat

Major League Soccer’s Expansion Draft takes place at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, as the two new boys, Orlando City SC and New York City FC, get to pick 10 players each from MLS’ current crop.

Here is the full list of protected and unprotected players from each team, as there are certainly plenty of gems for NYC FC and Orlando to pick up ahead of their inaugural seasons in 2015.

As we said, Jason Kreis and Adrian Heath have plenty of top players to pick from. But here’s the 10 players I would pick up...

Eddie Johnson - Needs a fresh start, proven goalscorer. Does either team want to spend DP money though?

Ned Grabavoy - Vastly experienced in MLS with Real Salt Lake. Easy to see Kreis taking him to NYC.

Chris Wingert - Same applies to Winger who shone for RSL under Kreis. Would also be great to finish his career in the Big Apple as a former St John’s standout.

Tim Cahill - Goes without saying that it may be best for Cahill to move on during RBNY’s transition. Could he join Villa and Lampard at crosstown rivals NYC FC? Or maybe Orlando?

Peguy Luyindula - Another Red Bull star who could be picked up, Luyindula has plenty of quality. Think Orlando should take a look at the former Lyon attacker.

Kenny Cooper - Bags of experience around MLS and an absolute beast, Cooper played a supporting role in Seattle behind Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey last season. Time for him to be a leading man elsewhere.

Adam Moffat - Yeah, what happened to this guy? After excelling with Houston in their run to two-straight MLS Cup finals, he’s been traded all over the place and is at Dallas. Would be a great pick up for either, plus he can smash in screamers.

Patrick Mullins - The Rookie showed what he can do when he came on in MLS Cup, as he helped to set up Chris Tierney’s goal. MLS star of the future, but may not get the chance to play regularly in New England.

Steve Caldwell - Experienced leader at the heart of Toronto’s defense, TFC missed Caldwell when he was out injured last year. Good fit for Orlando.

Robbie Findley - Another RSL player who could end up at NYC. Kreis loves to work with Findley and the pacey striker would be a good guy to have around.
