After winless October, USA drop out of top 20 in latest FIFA rankings

The latest FIFA world rankings were released on Thursday following a month of continental qualifiers across much of the globe, and fans of the U.S. national team might not be happy.

World Cup champs Germany stayed top of the pile, Argentina remain second, Colombia are steady in third, while Belgium and the Netherlands round off the top five. The only team to move into the top 10 was Portugal, who moved up two places to ninth, while Switzerland dropped two places to 12th after qualifying defeats.

As for the USA, Jurgen Klinsmann’s team dropped six places to 23 after two draws in October friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras. The U.S. were the biggest fallers in the top 25 as they move outside the top 20. The USMNT have two friendlies next month to help improve their ranking, as they face Colombia (Nov. 14) and Ireland (Nov. 18) in London and Dublin respectively. As per FIFA rules, Qualifying games count for more points than friendlies in the rankings, so this could suggest exactly why the USA have dropped out of the top 20.

Elsewhere the big movers were Slovakia who jumped up 16 places to 24th following their win Euro 2016 qualifying win over Spain, while Iceland are up six places to its highest ever ranking of 28th after its huge victory over the Netherlands. Austria are up 10 places to 29th. Algeria are in their highest-ever position in 15th, Russia fell seven places to 30th and Togo climbed a massive 73 places in the rankings over the last month

Across CONCACAF land, Mexico fell once place to 17th and Costa Rica drop a spot to 16th.
