Americans Abroad weekend wrap: Goalkeepers fall, two assists for Rubin
No goals this week for Americans plying their trade outside of America, but the goalkeepers saw some big names dent the scoreboard up close and in living color.
Tim Howard fell victim to a pair of Manchester United’s new boys, as Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao beat Howard over 98 minutes of play at Old Trafford, with Howard’s former team defeating Everton 2-1.
Brad Guzan didn’t fare much better when Aston Villa hosted Manchester City. Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero wore down the Villa defense before striking in the 82nd and 88th minutes to pull out all three points.
Jozy Altidore made the bench but did not play as Sunderland picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Stoke City.
Down to the Championship, Eric Lichaj was subbed off for Nottingham Forest in the 81st minute before the table-toppers pulled out an equalizer against Ipswich Town. Forest dropped to second in the table, level on points with Norwich and Watford. Their goal differential places them between the two.
Birmingham City was a little less American in its 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic, as Jonathan Spector’s been injured and Brek Shea didn’t make the game day 18. Will Packwood was on the bench, but did not play.
Defender Zak Whitbread went 90 minutes for Derby County, picking up a yellow card in a scoreless draw against Millwall. Tim Ream also played 90 minutes at home and picked up a yellow, but his Bolton club fell to 10-man Bournemouth by a 2-1 score.
Emerson Hyndman was an unused substitute in Fulham’s 2-0 loss at Middlesbrough.
To the Bundesliga, neither Dortmund’s Joe Gyau nor Hamburger SV’s Julian Green played in the latter’s road win, though Gyau was on the bench.
Fabian Johnson played 70 minutes in Borussia Monchengladbach’s 1-1 draw against Mainz. He picked up his third assist of the season on this goal from Max Kruse.
Elsewhere, Rubio Rubin and FC Utrecht fell to Go Ahead Eagles 3-2 despite the 18-year-old Oregonian putting forth two assists.
Ale Bedoya and Nantes are in fifth place after the Canaries won away at Guingamp, 1-0.
To Norway, Bob Bradley’s Stabaek side drew Bodo/Glimt 1-1. Andrew Jacobson and Michael Stephens both played 90 minutes. Mix Diskerud went 90 minutes as Rosenborg beat Lillestrom 2-0.
