Angry Ronaldo rips into Iceland’s “small mentality” after EURO opening draw

Portugal v Iceland - Group F: UEFA Euro 2016

SAINT-ETIENNE, FRANCE - JUNE 14: Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal talks to referee Cuneyt Cakir after the 1-1 draw in the UEFA EURO 2016 Group F match between Portugal and Iceland at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on June 14, 2016 in Saint-Etienne, France. (Photo by Michael Steele/Getty Images)

Cristiano Ronaldo does not understand the disparity between his Portugal side and the EURO tournament debutants they drew on Tuesday.

Iceland was dominated by managed a 1-1 draw against Portugal on Tuesday thanks in large part to terrific goalkeeping. It also helped that Ronaldo put a pair of late free kicks right into the Iceland wall.

Ed Malyon is the Spanish and European correspondent for the Daily Mirror, and he’s got some startling reaction from Ronaldo after the match. Some is on-point, and some is obtuse.

Cristiano Ronaldo: “Iceland only tried to defend... they had two chances and then did not try to score.”

More Ronaldo: “They celebrated like they had won the Euro cup or something. That’s a small mentality. That’s why they’ll do nothing.”

That’s small-time from Ronaldo, even if it’s rooted in truth. Some things are best left unsaid, and if the Portuguese captain is that wrapped up in roasting a small nation that just pulled off more than some were expecting for the whole group stage, then it’s no wonder Portugal has underachieved in his tenure “in charge”.

And The Mountain is not going to be amused by CR7’s comments.
