Ashley Young’s nine-year stay at Manchester United appears to be coming to an end.

Club captain Young, 34, is out of contract this summer and is free to talk to non-UK teams during the January transfer window.

Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan want to sign the versatile and experienced wide player and are said to be offering him an 18-month contract. Conte is said to have tried to sign Young while he was in charge of Chelsea in 2017 and wants his experience in the dressing room as Inter push Juventus all the way in the Serie A title race this season.

Our partners at Sky in Italy say that Young has turned down a one-year contract offer from Man United and intends to join Inter Milan on a free transfer this summer.

Young wants to move in January but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to not want to lose anybody from his injury-hit squad. If the move did go through, Young would join former United teammates Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez who joined Inter on permanent and loan deals respectively in the summer.

Man United’s fans often lambast Young but in recent seasons he has become a solid and reliable figure, especially in a more defensive role at full back. He is solid and steady and he has often worn the captains armband and is an influential figure in the dressing room.

Young has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during his time at United and has made 261 appearances in all competitions.

With the emergence of plenty of young talents at United this season, his time at Old Trafford would likely come to an end in the summer anyway so it would make sense for Young to push for a January exit if some kind of deal could be struck between United and Inter.

Perhaps a loan deal until the summer, thus effectively ending his time at the club?
