Banana-throwing suspect arrested; Alves advocates public shaming

Earlier this week Barcelona’s Dani Alves had a banana thrown at him during a game in Spain by a racist fan.

The man who allegedly threw a banana at Dani Alves as the Barcelona player was setting up for a corner kick has been arrested by Spanish police, according to the BBC.

The man in question is reported to be a 26-year-old Villarreal supporter, and the club has said the offender would have his season ticket revoked and received a lifetime ban from the stadium.

Alves famously responded by eating the banana before sending in the ball in Barca’s 3-2 come-from-behind win over Villarreal this past weekend.

The gesture from Alves sparked shows of support from luminaries around the world. That includes a photo from previously-vilified Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero and Marta, and comments from Pele himself.

As for punishment, here’s what Alves advocated in an interview with Brazil’s Radio Globo:

“If I could, I would put a photo of the fan on the internet so that he would be shamed.”

“There is racism against foreigners (in Spain). They sell the country as being first world but in certain things they are very backward.”

“I have been surprised by everyone’s support. I did it without thinking. The world has evolved and we must evolve with it.”
