Barcelona 4-3 Real Madrid: Instant classic (almost) secures La Liga for Barca

Barcelona and Real Madrid were involved in another monumental clash, one befitting of a title decider and Barca’s 4-3 El Clasico win on Sunday at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium has basically cemented the Blaugranas as La Liga winner.

Barca entered the match with a four-point lead atop La Liga and both teams have just 12 points to earn the rest of the season. Now the advantage is seven points and Real can only take nine from a season that’s seen Carlo Ancelotti’s men go 0-4 against Hansi Flick’s side.

Full time — Barcelona 4-3 Real Madrid.

The title is nearly signed, sealed, and delivered in Catalonia to the Catalans!

Fermin Lopez goal overturned

Lopez handled the ball well before he scored a fine individual goal, as a Real defender cleared the ball off his forearm.

The kid!

Victor Munoz has only been in the game for a moment, and his senior debut for Real Madrid makes his first shot — maybe his first touch — 1v1 with Szczesny and a chance to level El Clasico.

He flubs it wide. Impossible not to feel for him, regardless of club preference.

Penalty shout, ref goes to the screen and...

VAR is reviewing Ferran Torres’ close-range shot striking Aurelien Tchouameni’s forearm, which wasn’t tucked to his side but was close.

It’s a tough call if it happens, but Tchouameni’s arm is flexed at an angle, we guess? The ref is going to the screen.

He draws the invisible VAR box and announces... no penalty!

It remains 4-3 Barca in the 83rd minute. That call could loom large given the defending in this one.

Barca twice threaten to restore lead

Yamal just missed from distance, and then Raphinha’s sliding bid to make it 5-3 was put off by his proximity to the frame.

Brahim Diaz quickly has a chance at the other end but Barca’s De Jong makes a good challenge.

Kylian Mbappe hat trick goal — Barcelona 4-3 Real Madrid (71st mimute)

Remontada on?

Vini Jr leads a 2v1 after poor play at the back from Barca, passing across to Mbappe for a simple finish and a hat trick.

Two Real subs

Luka Modric and Brahim Diaz will take the places of Dani Ceballos and Arda Guler.

Halftime

Exhale.

Raphinha goal — Barcelona 4-2 Real Madrid (45th minute)

Raphinha just tackles the ball away from Vazquez’s bad touch in possession.

It’s then a quick 1-2 with Torres, who has three assists!

Mbappe wins penalty but VAR x2 against him

Jude Bellingham gets behind the Barca back line and sets up Mbappe for a chance, but the Frenchman makes a meal of his touch.

He looks to have been bailed out as Frenkie de Jong slides in and Mbappe hits the deck. The referee points to the spot.

Slow motions seems to show Mbappe with a near-perfect dive to simulate contact, but VAR sees an offside even before that. A razor-thin one, but offside.

Raphinha goal — Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid (34th minute)

Mbappe collides Ceballos in the midfield and away go Barca.

Pedri feeds Raphinha toward the left of the box and the Brazilian rolls a perfect finish past the leg of a splayed Courtois.

Lamine Yamal goal — Barcelona 2-2 Real Madrid (32nd minute)

Ferran Torres gets another assist, but this is all about the finish, the precision from such an acute angle.

Yamal lashes the ball across goal like an arrow through trees to make it 2-2.

Barca all over Real!

The Barca attack is very strong, and several chances have been just about foiled by Real.

Frenkie de Jong wants a penalty after being dragged down in the box a bit away from the ball, but VAR’s review is quick.

Still 2-1 in the 23rd minute, with visiting Real in front.

Eric Garcia goal — Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid (19th minute)

Hold on now.

Ferran Torres flicks a cross to the top of the six, and it’s Eric Garcia who beats his man and pounds a header off the ground and beyond Courtois.

Kylian Mbappe goal — Barcelona 0-2 Real Madrid (14th minute)

Make it two!

Barca want a foul for a Dani Ceballos tackle on Lamine Yamal, but it’s not coming as Real go the other way.

Mbappe is 1v1 with Szczesny and solves the Polish keeper for a second time.

What a start for Madrid!

Quick bid to answer

Eric Garcia beats Vini Jr and tries to hammer a tight-angled shot through Thibaut Courtois.

It is parried for a corner, and Real deal with that in the ninth minute.

Kylian Mbappe goal — Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid (fifth minute)

Mbappe cooly slots his penalty past a correctly-reading Szczesny.

Real Madrid penalty

An error at the back sees Madrid into the box.

Wojciech Szczesny snaps into Kylian Mbappe to give away a penalty and a bruise, to be sure.

But VAR is looking to see whether there’s a Madrid offside in the build-up. There is not.

Real’s early lineup reveal says something

There’s an arrogance to Real announcing their lineup nearly an hour before Barca.

There’s also a humility, as Real’s back line is weakened and everyone knows it.

“This is what you’re getting Barca. Do your worst.”

Barcelona lineup

Szczesny, Garcia, Cubarsi, Martinez, Martin, De Jong, Pedri, Olmo, Yamal, Raphinha, Torres

Real Madrid lineup

Courtois, Vazquez, Tchouameni, Asencio, Garcia, Ceballos, Valverde, Bellingham, Guler, Mbappe, Vinicius Jr
