Bournemouth 0-1 Aston Villa: Gestede’s debut header ruins the party

AFC Bournemouth suffered a 1-0 defeat at home against Aston Villa in their first-ever Premier League game. Rudy Gestede’s towering header in the second half was the difference, as the Cherries had the better chances but failed to capitalized down in the sun on the South Coast of England.

It was a scrappy start at the Vitality Stadium as both teams felt their way into the match. The first real chance fell to Bournemouth as Simon Francis played the ball into Marc Pugh but he fired his shot over from just inside the box.

Bournemouth continued to push as the first half wore on with Dan Gosling wasting a good chance and firing over after Pugh waltzed through Villa’s defense. Striker Callum Wilson then squandered a good chance after racing clear with Brad Guzan making the stop, and the U.S. international was called into action just before half time as Pugh saw his powerful shot well-saved.

After a first half where Villa were lucky to go in level, Sherwood’s men improved in the second half and Idrissa Gueye had his shot well-saved by Artur Boruc after a surging run from Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Substitute Gestede volleyed a shot wide of the far post as Villa continued to push for the opener, but Bournemouth continued to look more comfortable in possession and brought on new signing Max Gradel for the final 20 minutes.
In the battle of the subs, Gestede came out on top as he powered home a header from Ashley Westwood’s corner to score his first Villa goal just 13 minutes after coming on as a sub. Late on Bournemouth pressed for an equalizer but Matt Ritchie was off target with two efforts.
