It was a scrappy start at the Vitality Stadium as both teams felt their way into the match. The first real chance fell to Bournemouth as Simon Francis played the ball into Marc Pugh but he fired his shot over from just inside the box.

Bournemouth continued to push as the first half wore on with Dan Gosling wasting a good chance and firing over after Pugh waltzed through Villa’s defense. Striker Callum Wilson then squandered a good chance after racing clear with Brad Guzan making the stop, and the U.S. international was called into action just before half time as Pugh saw his powerful shot well-saved.

After a first half where Villa were lucky to go in level, Sherwood’s men improved in the second half and Idrissa Gueye had his shot well-saved by Artur Boruc after a surging run from Gabriel Agbonlahor.
