Bundesliga wrap: Stuttgart thrills at Ingolstadt; Bayern blasts Bremen

Germany Soccer Bundesliga

Frankfurt’s Carlos Zambrano , third right, and Ingolstadt’s Marvin Matip vie for the ball with Ingolstadt’s goalkeeper Ramazan Ozcan to the right during the German Bundesliga soccer match between Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Ingolstadt at the Commerzbank-Arena, in Frankfurt, Germany, Saturday March 5, 2016. Bayern Munich 5-0 Werder Bremen

The table leaders held the ball for a whopping 74 percent of the game, out-attempting resurgent Bremen by a 20-2 margin and completing 742 more passes than the visitors.

Seven hundred. And forty-two.

Thiago Alcantara and Thomas Muller each scored twice in the win, which saw Bayern move its Bundesliga lead to 8 points ahead of Dortmund’s Sunday match. Robert Lewandowski added his 24th goal of the season for Bayern, who hosts Juventus in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League’s Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Ingolstadt 3-3 Stuttgart

The goals came in bunches at Audi Sportspark, and the final pair of tallies certainly won’t have let the home fans feel happy on the way out of the stadium. Lukas Rupp and Daniel Didavi erased Stuttgart’s 3-1 deficit between the 79th and 84th minutes.

Hertha Berlin 2-0 Schalke

A big Friday match in the race for the UEFA Champions League turned out to be relatively one-sided. Vedad Ibisevic and Niklas Stark scored on either side of halftime as the third-place hosts opened up a four-point cushion on now fifth-place Schalke. USMNT center back John Brooks again went 90 minutes, completing 43 of 48 passes as Hertha shutout Bundesliga opposition for the fourth time in five matches.
