According to officials in the west African nation one person was killed and three others, including the person who threw the grenade, were seriously injured as a crowd had gathered in the capital city of Conkary to watch the Guinean national team take on African powerhouses Ivory Coast on TV.

Mamadou Alpha Barry, national police spokesman, said the incident occurred around the same time that the Ivory Coast grabbed a late equalizer to snatch a point but conflicting reports say the explosion from the grenade happened “by accident” when Guinea went 1-0 up in the first half.

Since the attack was confirmed by police, residents say that up to three people were killed in the explosion but police say they can only confirm one fatality.

It is believed that the fans had gathered in a soccer bar in Conkary to watch the game, as electricity had been knocked out in the surrounding neighborhood.
