Did Brek Shea give an “obscene gesture” to his home supporters?

Derby day’s electricity comes in high voltage, especially when the end result finds your club on the losing end of a 5-0 scoreline that heightens relegation danger.

That’s what happened to Barnsley in their weekend match with Huddersfield Town, and there are reports of unsavory encounters between Tykes supporters in the stadium and a pair of Barnsley players that includes on-loan American winger Brek Shea.

It’s not sounding pretty. Here’s a bit from Doug O’Kane at the Barnsley Chronicle:

(Stephen) Dawson was seen shouting at one individual fan and moving towards him before he was restrained by Shea and Peter Ramage. Shea – who is currently on international duty with the USA – is alleged to have stuck his fingers up to the supporters in an offensive gesture.

Dawson, for his part, has already apologized. The report says the team does not expect to say anything further regarding Shea until he returns from US camp.

“In relation to an alleged incident concerning Brek Shea: the matter is currently under investigation and a further statement will be made upon Brek’s return from international duty.”

Shea turned 24 on Friday, and certainly is reaching the age where he should know better than to “flip the bird” or any other kind of obscene gesture... especially at his home fans. Not a great moment for the big Texan.
