The French are now unbeaten in their last 16 games against England but it was certainly a hard-fought win in Canada.

After an even start to the game in blustery Moncton, France took the lead in the 28th minute through a fantastic effort from 20-yards out via Le Sommer.

Bassett and Chapman were caught in possession in midfield for England and France’s attack pounced to set up Le Sommer who drilled her effort past Bardsley at the near post. 1-0 to Les Bleus.

France applied plenty of pressure to try and add to their leader England before the interval but the Lionesses held on to only be 1-0 down at the break.

In the second half England improved but France looked dangerous on the break as Le Sommer fired over. Jill Scott went close for England as a corner found her in the box but her effort lacked the desired power and direction.

England brought on Toni Duggan and Fran Kirby for the final stages to try and unlock the French defense but Les Bleus always looked comfortable enough as the No. 3 ranked team in the world started their World Cup campaign with a win.

Next up for the French is Colombia on Saturday in Moncton, while England face Mexico straight after that game.
