Hull City’s Nikica Jelavic quits Croatia national team
After sitting out Croatia’s 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifier win over Bulgaria on Friday, Nikica Jelavic decided he could watch the games just as well from home.
Jelavic, 29, has stepped down as a member of the Croatia team after 36 caps and six goals.
He played in two of Croatia’s matches at the World Cup, one as a substitute, before playing just 45 minutes in the last international break. He picked up an assist there, but did not suit up on Friday.
And that was that. From the Associated Press:
Croatia coach Niko Kovac was surprised by Jelavic’s announcement and wished him well in his future career.
Kovac said: “I thank him for everything he has done for the Croatian national team. I wish him the best in his life and his club football career.”
Jelavic is in fine form for Hull, with four goals on the young season, and the Tigers probably won’t mind his decision one bit as they hope to continue their Premier League rise.
