Barcelona have confirmed that Luis Suarez has injured the semimembranosus muscle in his upper right leg.

The Uruguayan striker, 29, limped off during Barca’s 2-0 Copa del Rey win over Sevilla on Sunday in Madrid and looked to be in tears as he feared the worse.

With the Copa America Centenario kicking off in the United States of America on June 3, Suarez’s presence at that competition seems in doubt but the positive news is that he will at least be on U.S. soil for the tournament.

In a statement Barcelona revealed that Suarez will remain in Barcelona for the next week and will join up with Uruguay in the USA ahead of their Group C campaign beginning on June 5 against Mexico in Arizona.

“Tests have confirmed this morning that Luis Suarez has an injury to his right thigh. Following the prescription of medical team at the club, the player will begin the first part of rehabilitation in Barcelona. On June 1, the player will join the selection of Uruguay in the United States to continue the second phase of this muscle recovery.”

Losing Suarez would, of course, be a huge blow for Uruguay.

He’s only just returned for La Celeste after receiving a nine-game international ban following his bite on the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez was Barca’s top goalscorer this season with 59 goals in all competitions and he won the Pichichi in La Liga after scoring 40 league goals.

Given the recovery time for an injury of this nature, Suarez may miss the first couple of games for Uruguay but if they make it out of the group stage then he could feature in the knockout games.

After Neymar skipping the tournament as Brazil and Barcelona agreed he’d play at Rio 2016, it would be a huge shame to see another global star out of the tournament and not be able to battle it out with Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez and other leading lights.
