Jurgen Klinsmann liked the result, but he wasn’t a fan of the performance.

The USMNT defeated Guatemala 4-0 in their final send-off match before the Gold Cup, and despite the lopsided scoreline, Klinsmann said there is still much to improve on.

After taking a 1-0 lead, the U.S. failed to continue pressing and looked a bit sluggish heading into halftime. Klinsmann must have said something in the dressing room, as the U.S. scored three goals in the second half.

Speaking to the media following the match, Klinsmann said his side did not play up to the standards he expects.

The performance? Not so nice. I’m not happy with that performance.

I’m kind of disappointed with a couple of things: moving off the ball, speed of play, urgency. Things we talked about before were not executed the way we wanted them to be executed.

We gave some chances away that you can’t afford on a international level, it was just too easy. We didn’t create enough. We have to talk through that … what’s coming up is three-and-a-half weeks of a grind.”

Guatemala is not the strongest opponent, and the opening match of the Gold Cup on Tuesday against Honduras will surely be tougher. There were times when Guatemala had some good looks on goal, looks that should have been finished and could haunt the United States should they happen in a competitive tournament.

However, this was the first time in a while that Klinsmann put out an A-team lineup, one that probably won’t see many changes come Tuesday. There may have been some kinks to work out tonight, but the U.S. will still be favorites to reach a sixth straight Gold Cup final in July.
