On a night its women struggled in the World Cup, Canada’s men took the next step toward qualifying to the 2018 World Cup scheduled for Russia.

Russell Teibert (Vancouver Whitecaps) and Cyle Larin (Orlando City) staked Les Rouges to a 2-0 lead in Dominica before holding on through a late red card to carry that edge into the second leg of their CONCACAF second round match.

As you’ll see in the highlights below, it’s perhaps a bit harsh to judge Canada for only coming away with a 2-0 win. The pitch was quite dark, and winning on a minnows’ field presents different challenges than BMO Field will offer Tuesday’s match.

After defying the linesman to race in and score a sixth minute goal, in-form Larin drew a penalty kick in the 67th. Teibert left no doubt with his attempt, and Canada’s lead was doubled.

Ludogorets Razgrad keeper Milan Borjan was sent off in the 80th minute after deliberately handling a ball outside the box.

Haiti and Jamaica enter in the third round, while the US is among six teams which won’t join qualifying until the fourth round.
