Manchester City 2-1 Swansea City: Late drama in big doses at the Etihad

Manchester City, coming off a loss to Stoke City, welcome Swansea City into Etihad Stadium in Round 16 of the Premier League.

Wilfried Bony heaped troubling feelings onto his old team, and Yaya Toure scored a stoppage-time stunner to lead Manchester City to a 2-1 win at Swansea City on Saturday.

The Etihad Stadium was the scene for the first match of the post-Garry Monk era, a rain-drenched affair between two sides willing to sacrifice in order to attack.

City is back atop the table thanks to Bony’s headed goal and Yaya’s late laser, with the Sky Blues now ahead of Leicester on goal differential before the Foxes face Chelsea on Monday.

Swansea City saw a goal controversially waved off by Bobby Madley for goalkeeper interference, but Gomis belted a shot over Hart’s shoulder in the 90th minute to level things up (only for moments).

There wasn’t much to say about the first half before Bony reaped the rewards of three good individual runs off a corner. His was the third, and he powered his open header home off a Jesus Navas cross.

And maybe you should rate the fella higher.

The second half saw Swans threaten to equalize, and a lively Gylfi Sigurdsson provided quite a challenge for Joe Hart and his Sky Blues.

Swans looked to have equalized in the 85th minute, after Hart pushed the ball away from Bafetimbi Gomis and Sigurdsson belted in the rebound. But the goal was disallowed when referee Bobby Madley deemed Gomis’ pressure against the rules.

But Gomis slipped behind the City defense and pinged a pellet over Hart to make it 1-1 in the 90th before Yaya beat Lukasz Fabianski to restore three points to Manchester.
