Manchester United 0-0 West Ham United: Shot-happy Red Devils miss the mark

Louis van Gaal’s critics will point to Saturday morning’s game against West Ham as further proof that his style is not working for the Old Trafford set.

But United were simply wasteful, hammering shot after shot off-target in a 0-0 draw with the Irons that kept them taking advantage of Manchester City’s 2-0 loss at Stoke.

United sits fourth with 29 points, below City on goal differential. West Ham is in sixth with 23 points.

It’s not like there weren’t chances for both sides.

The Irons clanged the ball off the left goal post twice in the first half, with Andy Carroll pressuring a near own goal before Winston Reid headed a cross off the same stick.

And Andy Carroll beautifully set up Mauro Zarate for what should’ve been an easy-enough goal, but Zarate didn’t put the ball anywhere near the desire side panel.

On the United side, Anthony Martial was a jinxed man. He created a number of solid chances, but simply couldn’t find his finish.

And Jesse Lingard should’ve put the Red Devils ahead in the 82nd minute but smashes the ball wide of the frame.

Manchester United gave Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela his debut with under a half-hour to play.
