Manchester United scout Portugal’s “new Ronaldo”

Manchester United have gone to Jose Mourinho’s homeland to scout a player dubbed the “new Ronaldo”.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that United sent scouts to watch 19-year-old winger Goncalo Guedes as he played in Benfica’s 4-0 win over Feirense last weekend.

Guedes has already won two caps for the Portuguese national team and scored for Benfica in their UEFA Champions League defeat at Napoli last week.

The winger is, of course, a client of “super agent” Jorge Mendes who also happens to be the agent of Cristiano Ronaldo and United’s manager Mourinho.

If you look at the video above, you’ll see that the comparisons between Guedes and Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo seem close to the mark.

Full of tricks and currently with a tall, skinny frame, it casts your mind back to Ronaldo’s early days at Old Trafford when he was more concerned about wing-play and trickery than the powerful goalscoring machine he has now become. Guedes has also been used as a central striker by Benfica this season but there’s no doubting his best position is out wide.

Portuguese soccer is on a high right now after winning EURO 2016 plus having young midfielder Renato Sanches also emerge from Benfica and he bagged a big money move to Bayern Munich this summer.

Is Guedes the next man to make the move from Portugal to one of Europe’s big boys?

With Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Memphis and others around at United, chances for Guedes may be limited but he’s one of the top prospects in Europe so I’m sure Mr. Mourinho could make room for him...
