Marcelo extends contract with Real Madrid another 2 years

Real Madrid’s future has plenty of question marks surrounding the Bernabeu, but Marcelo’s future surely isn’t one of those.

The Brazilian defender inked a two-year contact extension to keep him locked down at Real Madrid through the summer of 2020, the club announced Friday. The move likely increases his salary to coincide with his increase in reliability and international exposure the last few seasons.

At 27 years old and in the prime of his career, Marcelo has been one of Real Madrid’s most consistent performers the last two seasons, and has become one of the world’s premier left backs. Able to shut down a wide area with physicality and precision tackling as well as providing an attacking threat on the overlap, his $7.2 million move from Fluminese in 2007 has paid untold dividends for the Spanish club.

He has racked up 320 matches with Real Madrid, including 53 of those last season alone. He’s put 23 shots past opposing goalkeepers - including one in the Champions League final last year - and has assisted 52 others. He has a propensity to find himself in the referee’s book, but often pays off. While he’s been yellow-carded 60 times in his Real Madrid career, he’s only been sent off on three separate occasions.
