Martinez “couldn’t be happier” with Everton comeback

Monday night at the Hawthorns was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Roberto Martinez, as he watched his Everton side go 2-0 down to West Bromwich Albion, only to storm back with three goals in the final 35 minutes to win 3-2.

Speaking during his post-game television interview (above video), the 42-year-old Spaniard was equally quick to laud his side’s slow start as he was to praise their inspired comeback.

Martinez, on the slow start and furious comeback:

“We were very disappointed with the first-half play. We were off, every single individual, and that made it very difficult for us to get any sort of rhythm. When you look at the mountain we had to climb, especially with conceding the second goal, I couldn’t be happier with the character, the response, the resilience that we had. The attitude, because it would have been all too easy to lose our focus.”

Monday’s come-from-behind victory was the kind of game that last year’s Everton would have finished out by simply going through the motions. There’s a different air about them this year, one that resembles the 2013-14 season when they finished fifth. It’s also a massive boost that Romelu Lukaku is playing like a man on fire again, just as his did during that same on-loan season.
