Javier Mascherano won’t spend a single day inside a Spanish prison for his evasion of paying taxes on nearly $2 million of income.

Instead, the Barcelona midfielder/defender will pay a fine of nearly $900,000 after agreeing a deal with the prosecution on Thursday. The deal actually includes a year of prison time, but reports out of Spain indicate that Mascherano “will not actually have to serve” any part of the sentence.
Mascherano’s trial was previously scheduled to begin in short order, though Thursday’s deal doesn’t mean the trial won’t still take place; in reality, it means the case’s proceedings will move along much more swiftly now that the two sides have reached a common ground.
Ironically, Mascherano was awarded Barcelona’s 2015 Fair Play award earlier in the day on Thursday.
