Rory McIlroy had just reclaimed the Claret Jug for the United Kingdom and, in his glee, apparently was taken aback when his soccer quip went awry.
A Manchester United supporter giving a victory speech at Royal Liverpool, McIlroy made the mistake of mentioning his Red Devils fanhood.

What followed was genuinely angsty, lively booing from a Merseyside crowd more in tune with McIlroy’s ex-fiancee’s allegiance than his team tastes:

The crowd had been giving him love all day, and a standing ovation on his walk up to the 18th green. But the mention of Liverpool’s rivals was a bit too much, and had McIlroy backpedaling quickly.
We doubt it will tarnish the win for Rory, but the real question is whether the fans were silenced by stewards holding up, “Quiet Please” signs, or relented on their own?
