Minnesota United could join MLS with the most interesting coach around

Carl Craig

Minnesota United FC

Sometimes an article makes you want to dig deeper and deeper into the background of a coach, and Minnesota United head coach Carl Craig fits that bill perfectly.

A former punk rocker, activist, even a hypnotist of sorts, Craig also happens to be the head coach of the Loons.

[ REPORT: Townsend moving to Palace ]

Craig was profiled in a must-read piece for The Guardian ahead of United’s move to Major League Soccer next year that may have you, too, looking for more info on the English coach.

Here’s a sample:

He is the friendly, impressionable funnyman now leading their team down a merry road. That colorful biography threads through his approach to management. Lapsed punk musician, former bike messenger, one-time aspiring vegan restaurant owner. Somehow those experiences all seem to find life around the Minnesota camp. In his coaching, he broaches into New Age territory. Meditation. Even hypnosis. But behind the jocular atmosphere, behind his unusual methods, lies a well-respected, serious football man.

Go on.

Craig has coached in the NPSL, PDL and now NASL.

He once bought champagne before a championship game for his U-16 team at Shattuck St. Mary’s -- they weren’t offered actual drinks -- for the “symbolism” of it. The same article details his brush with death. Another details how he thought his team was playing too nice, “too Minnesotan” during a losing spell.
