The marking from Toronto was absolutely criminal, but that shouldn’t subtract from the commendation ahead for Julio Cesar’s outstanding strike last night for Sporting Kansas City.

Graham Zusi is on the corner kick as Toronto falls completely asleep, allowing the SKC deep-lying midfielder to jog in and uncontested (unseen and unheard, by the looks of it; what is he, a ninja?) toward the far post.

Before you watch Cesar’s smash, the second in a 2-0 win that spoiled Paul Mariner’s debut as top guy at TFC, know this about the job ahead for Toronto’s new manager:

The job at BMO Field is all about defense. I know it looks like TFC’s offense is totally inept, with a measly eight goals scored in 11 matches. But the chances were there last night. How Eric Avila didn’t score as he went in alone, only to see the ball carom off both posts, only the soccer gods could say. Avila came close once again in the second half, and Danny Koevermans couldn’t score when put through wonderfully.

But I honestly think with Koevermans healthy again, the goals are out there. Meanwhile, nothing will improve around TFC, win-loss and points-wise, until they get better defenders, or convince the current defenders to, you know, freakin’ defend!

The marking on SKC’s first goal was equally jayvee-level, as Richard Eckersley just doesn’t stay close enough to C.J. Sapong, and therefore can’t offer any kind of challenge as the SKC striker crushes one to supply the home team a 35th-minute lead.

Good luck, Coach Mariner. Lots of work ahead for you, man. While he sorts that out, enjoy Cesar’s crusher.
