MLS Player of the Week — Week 15: New York City FC’s David Villa

David Villa

David Villa, New York City FC

Why David Villa for Week 15 MLS Player of the Week? It’s simply, really: because Sebastian Giovinco and Toronto FC didn’t have a game this week, so it would be essentially impossible to pick him.

That is, of course, said in jest (kind of), considering how good the little Italian has been thus far in his Major League Soccer career. Speaking of looking really good early on during his time in MLS, New York City FC’s Villa has been a star of stars in 2015, when healthy.

On Saturday night, Villa turned in a performance of the highest quality and helped push a suddenly surging NYCFC side to a second straight victory out of the basement of the MLS standings (they’re 19th, level on points but ahead of the Colorado Rapids based on tiebreakers).

Spain’s all-time leading international goalscorer opened Saturday’s scoring with a simple but classy finish (above video) to complete a dazzling bit of interplay inside the Montreal Impact penalty area. With the Impact showing signs of a comeback late on, Villa then set up Kwadwo Poku’s game-icing goal (below video) with a delicate ball played into the box for the young Ghanaian to slot home.
