MLS Snapshot: D.C. United 1-0 LA Galaxy
The game in 100 words (or less): No Robbie Keane, Gyasi Zardes or Jaime Penedo (international duty) for the Galaxy, which automatically means the quality — for one side, at least — was going to suffer. So much of this game was played in the middle third of the field (D.C. United managed just six shots, to the Galaxy’s 17), while both teams raced up and down the wings and failed to link any semblance of a forward passing game through the center. In the end, it was heartbreak for Bruce Arena’s side as United stole the three points completely against the run of play.

Three moments that mattered
43' — Hamid stops Gordon’s goal-bound header — Alan Gordon hammered a header low and goal-bound just before halftime, but Bill Hamid was quick to move to his right and hit the ground, smothering the ball just before it bounced over the line.
63' — Rowe dives to save Pontius’s header — Dribbles down the wing and crosses into the center were the main source of goalscoring chances in this game, and Chris Pontius nearly headed home Nick DeLeon’s cross just past the hour mark, but Brian Rowe was quick across his goal and made the diving save.
93' — Pontius scores at the death — DeLeon showed a fancy piece of skill, flicking the ball over the head of Robbie Rogers before looping a cross to Pontius at the back post. All Pontius had to do was redirect the ball inside the empty post, and that he did.
Man of the match: Bill Hamid — If not for a handful of key saves, United find themselves down two or three, and Pontius’s tally is little more than consolation.
D.C. United: Hamid, Kemp, Birnbaum (Opare 5'), Boswell, Franklin, Rolfe (Farfan 78'), Kitchen, Arnaud, DeLeon, Arrieta (Doyle 82'), Pontius
Goals: Pontius (93')
LA Galaxy: Rowe, DeLaGarza, Gonzalez, Leonardo (Gargan 57'), Rogers, Ishizaki, Juninho, Vayrynen (Buddle 72'), Husidic, Gordon, Villarreal
