San Jose Earthquakes v FC Dallas

The game in 100 words (or less): It’s early in the season, and not every Week-1 game can be Vancouver-Toronto. FC Dallas needed every last second to finally break through against a resolute San Jose Earthquakes defense, but as they say, persistence pays off. The Earthquakes are much improved from 2014, while FCD were a bit disappointing, if not rusty and far from the finished product. Three points are three points, though.

Three moments that mattered

21' — Back-to-back chances for Perez go begging — Blas Perez could’ve/should’ve scored twice within 60 seconds. His first chance was the result of a clever set-piece routine to free him up at the near post, but the shot pounded goalkeeper David Bingham in the chest. The second chance was cleared off the line by Paulo Renato after Perez’s low burner had beaten Bingham to the far post.

84' — Bingham stone-walls Akindele — Tesho Akindele had a chance from point-blank range, but couldn’t make clean contact with the cross as it arrived at the top of the six-yard box. He managed to direct it goalward anyway, giving Bingham a bit of trouble with the awkward hop, but the ‘keeper held tight after an initial bobble.

90+3' — FCD get what they deserve — It wasn’t pretty, but when you find yourself three minutes into stoppage time, you can’t be picky how the goals are scored. Moises Hernandez’s shot was headed wide of the target, but Perez put his head on it, wrong-footing Bingham and finding the back of the net.
