The game in 100 words (or less): Barring an epic collapse in the season’s final six games (that might not even be enough to unseat them), FC Dallas are going to win the 2016 Supporters’ Shield in the closest thing to runaway fashion as you’re bound to see in MLS. After Saturday’s 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers, Oscar Pareja’s men are seven points clear of New York City FC in the race for the Shield, and eight points clear of Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids for home-field advantage in the Western Conference. The Hoops lost arguably their best player, Fabian Castillo, less than a month ago. The transition into the post-Castillo era has been nearly seamless, and they still look to be the deepest team in the league. The Timbers, meanwhile, have just two wins in their last seven games, and sit dangerously close (three points clear) of the playoff cut line.

Three moments that mattered

14' — Diaz converts from the spot for 1-0 — Goalkeepers can guess right, but when it’s hit so sweetly as Mauro Diaz did here, they’ve got no chance.

45+2' — Ulloa arrives late and hammers the loose ball home — Liam Ridgewell opted for a siesta at the penalty spot, rather than the rotate and pick up the late-arriving run of Victor Ulloa. The score quickly became 2-0.

53' — Zimmerman heads home Diaz’s free kick for 3-0 — With service like this, center backs Walker Zimmerman and Matt Hedges could just about combine to lead FCD in goals scored.
