MLS Snapshot: New York Red Bulls 4-1 Philadelphia Union

Connor Lade, Lloyd Sam

New York Red Bulls

The game in 100 words (or less): Sometimes a game is over before it even has a chance to truly get started. When you conceded a goal inside the first seven seconds (an MLS record), four minutes and 17 minutes, it’s probably over for you. Welcome to the world of the Philadelphia Union, who on Sunday traveled to Red Bull Arena for no other reason than they were required to in order to pick up their paychecks(s) for the month of October. Mike Grella (twice), Bradley Wright-Phillips and Kemar Lawrence provided the goals for the Red Bulls, who clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference as well as home-field advantage throughout the entirety of the East playoffs. A win over the lowly Chicago Fire next Sunday (barring a massive goal-differential comeback by FC Dallas) would see the Red Bulls lift their second Supporters’ Shield in club history (and the last three years).

Three moments that mattered

7 seconds — Grella sets the MLS record — One… two… three… four… five… six…. seven. Just like that, it was 1-0 to the Red Bulls. Watch Grella’s record-breaking goal HERE.

4' — BWP reacts quickly, turns it home — Sacha Kljestan took the corner kick, Damien Perrinelle provided the flick to the far post, and Wright-Phillips, the league’s best one-touch assassin, ushered it over the line for 2-0. In theory, soccer isn’t this easy.

17' — Grella fakes, Grella fires, Grella scores — Grella’s ninth goal of the season (to go with seven assists) made it 3-0 to the Red Bulls. Dax McCarty swung the ball wide, and “Grelladinho” opted for the same low, near-post lash as his first of the day.
