Netherlands continue nosedive with loss to Turkey, out of Euro 2016 qualifying position

The third-place finishers in the 2014 World Cup may not even be represented at Euro 2016. The expanded Euro 2016.

Yet another loss - a 3-0 embarrassment to Turkey, the fourth of the Dutch qualifying campaign - sees the Netherlands drop into the bottom half of Group A with just a pair of games left to play. Turkey got goals from Arda Turan, Oguzhan Ozyakup, and a third in garbage time from Burak Yilmaz.

The Dutch had utterly nothing to offer Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Babacan, as Wesley Sneijder and Memphis Depay both resorted to pounding long-range prayers with a half-hour to go.

We could see the warning lights flashing as the Dutch fired Guus Hiddink in late June, but things haven’t at all improved under interim manager Danny Blind. With the elder Blind in charge, the team has now lost two straight and has failed to score a single goal in both.

With games against Kazakhstan and Czech Republic left, the Dutch are in a must-win scenario, and will require some help from those above them just to make the playoff round. In a time when a host of young Dutch players made a name for themselves in Brazil and have subsequently struck gold in the transfer window, the national team is facing a crisis.
