Newcastle lose Jamaal Lascelles to injury
Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles will be out until January with a knee injury.
Lascelles, 26, suffered the knee injury in the 2-1 win against Bournemouth before the international break, as Callum Wilson appeared to push him into his own goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle only confirmed that Lascelles will be out until “the new year” with the injury. He is expected to at the very least miss games against Aston Villa, Manchester City, Sheffield United, Southampton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Everton.
This is a big blow for Steve Bruce’s side, who despite all of the offseason gloom have won their last two Premier League games to push themselves up to 13th in the table and they’re just two points off fifth place.
Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez will have to step things up in Lascelles’ absence, while Paul Dummett is likely to come in for Lascelles.
Fellow center back Fabian Schar is set to return from injury soon, while Florian Lejuene remains a long-term absentee
Aside from Lascelles’ ability as a defender, he galvanizes this entire Newcastle side and his leadership qualities will be missed during a pivotal stretch of the season.
Lascelles has been at the heart of the 3-5-2 system used by Bruce, as the ultra-defensive style of play has led Newcastle to shock 1-0 wins against Tottenham and Manchester United.
