Newcastle United agrees $17 million fee for Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle United isn’t going down without a fight.

One day after signing Henri Saivet from Bordeaux, the Magpies will further strengthen their midfield with the $17 million purchase of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City, pending a Tuesday medical.

Shelvey, 23, has struggled for playing time in recent weeks, left out of the squad by either Garry Monk or Alan Curtis in four of seven matches since scoring a goal and adding an assist against Bournemouth on Nov. 21.

He’ll provide a shot to the middle of the park, as Moussa Sissoko and Cheick Tiote’s performances have been mercurial while Vurnon Anita and Jack Colback have been unspectacular. Shelvey plays with guts and zeal, something needed in Newcastle’s central midfield.

Steve McClaren’s thoughts,

“He has great experience for a young English central midfielder and is a current England international, so I’m certain he will be a great addition to the squad.

“He is a player we have admired for some time and we’re very pleased that we’ve now been able to bring him here.”

Swans are two points above 18th place Newcastle in the relegation battle, and face 19th place Sunderland on Wednesday.

Newcastle plays Manchester United at St. James Park on Tuesday.
