Official: Charlie Davies returns to MLS, joins New England Revolution

Charlie Davies 2

After spending most of his professional career outside the USA, national team striker Charlie Davies is back on American soil.

But only on a loan deal to start off with. However if Davies does impress, the option of a permanent transfer is tied into the deal.

The former D.C. United star is heading to the New England Revolution, as he returns to the region he grew up in and where he also played for Boston College. Davies, 27, is looking to revive his career after several moves across Europe that haven’t quite worked out.

You may remember that Davies was involved in a serious car crash in Washington D.C. leading up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Davies missed the national teams run to the last 16 and has failed to recapture the form that saw him become a regular in Bob Bradley’s USMNT plans.

He’s been fighting to get his form back ever since.

So, it this the case of one in, one out, for the Revs? Well, with Juan Agudelo announcing earlier today that his move to Stoke City is lined up for January, his participation for the rest of the MLS season may be questionable. Davies could slot in and give New England an added attacking impetus for the remained of the 2013 campaign.

But fans of New England, and MLS, will be watching Davies closely after a less than prolific spell for Randers FC in Denmark. Davies has so far failed to score for his new side since joining them from Sochaux last year. 23 games without a goal, whatever the circumstances, doesn’t bode well for a striker and Davies will look to get back to his clinical best. Fast.

After signing for Hammarby straight out of college in 2007 and turning down MLS advances, Davies excelled in his second pro season by scoring 14 times in 25 starts. He then moved onto French Ligue 1 side Sochaux but that terrible car crash knocked him back and its been a struggle to recover his form ever since. However Davies did score 11 goals in 26 appearances while on loan with D.C. United in 2011.

New England will be hoping the local product will deliver and help them push onto the playoffs. This loan seems like a good deal for everyone. Plus, we may get to see him doing the stanky leg again... That was awesome. And push back into the USMNT setup, you never know.

But seriously, the guy is a clinical and cool finisher. So below is a hat trick he scored for D.C. in 2011 to remind you what he’s all about.
