Surprise City, population: Many.

Metro sports writer Kristian Dyer is reporting that the New York Red Bulls have fired head coach Mike Petke.

UPDATE: The Red Bulls confirmed the firing on Wednesday morning. “I want to thank Mike for his service to the club these past two seasons as head coach,” said Sporting Director Ali Curtis. “Mike will always be an important member of the Red Bull family.”

There are so many questions to be answered. For one thing, Petke not only delivered the first major trophy in club history with the 2013 Supporters Shield, but also shepherded the club to the Eastern Conference final this season.

Petke also signed a new deal with New York in 2014.

From Metro:

Petke, who in two years as head coach of the club delivered the Supporters Shield, in 2013, and took the team to within a game of the MLS Cup this past season, was relieved of his duties on Tuesday. A team source tells Metro New York that new sporting director Ali Curtis was the one who relieved Petke of his duties after meeting with the head coach at Red Bull Arena.

Curtis was named sporting director just before Christmas.

The MLS Combine is this week and the draft soon after, and the firing comes quite late in the offseason. Consider us shocked, and we’ll wait for the next shoe to drop. Petke instantly becomes the biggest name on the MLS market.

As for whether Petke saw it coming:
