Numerous reports in the UK -- most notably in the Guardian -- claim that Van Gaal, 64, will be fired if United lose to Chelsea at Old Trafford (Watch live, 12:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN and online via Live Extra) on Monday.

The Guardian claims that LVG held talks with United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the weekend after his comments following the 2-0 defeat to Stoke City on Boxing Day.

Van Gaal said he may quit rather than being fired.

United have lost four games on the spin in all competitions and are winless in seven as the pressure has been mounting on LVG with his side eliminated from the UEFA Champions League plus also slipping out of the Premier League’s top four in recent weeks. Despite captain Wayne Rooney and vice-captain Michael Carrick coming out and publicly supporting their manager, too many star names haven’t performed this season with new signings Memphis, Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger struggling after giving the team an initial boost.

Van Gaal blew his lid last week and walked out of a press conference after he called for journalists to apologize to him following widespread reports that he would be fired and Jose Mourinho would replace him.

Oh, think of the irony if the club which just fired Mourinho, Chelsea, were to hammer the final nail in LVG’s coffin on Monday by defeating the Red Devils and inadvertently handing Mourinho the chance to replace LVG.

The managerial merry-go-round works in mysterious ways as the veteran Dutch coach looks highly likely to be heading out of the exit door at Old Trafford for the final time.
