Wayne Rooney broke out of his slump in style, scoring a trio of goals in Manchester United’s 4-0 thumping of Club Brugge on Wednesday.

And his manager was, of course, happy to see Rooney clinically-finish the offerings of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Memphis Depay.

After lauding his side’s simplicity and organization, Van Gaal turned his thoughts to Rooney.

From the BBC:

“Every goal shall give confidence to every player, even Wayne. I’m very happy for him.

“He has the best mentality that you can imagine. Such players with that level will always come back.”

Rooney, for his part, credited his mindset.

“To be honest, if I didn’t have a strong character (the criticism) might have affected me. I wasn’t worried. It is early days and when the chances came I took them.”
